Cognition and Learning
Support with learning difficulties is often needed if a child is learning at a slower pace than their peers despite appropriate quality first teaching and differentiation. There are many different types of learning difficulties and disabilities. In school these are categorised as Moderate (MLD) , Severe (SLD) and Profound (PMLD). Often it is the case that if your child is working at a slower pace across all subjects they will need extra support to enable them to access education at level which is appropriate to their needs. All children with cognition and learning difficulties have different needs and need a personalised approach.
Specific Learning Difficulties
Sometimes it can be the case that children struggle with a specific area of the curriculum for example: literacy or maths. In this case they may have a Specific Learning Difficulty such as 'dyslexia' or 'dyscalculia'. At HGPS we are currently working to support a large proportion of children with suspected Specific Learning Difficulties using a dyslexia friendly approach in the classrooms and personalised and targeted interventions to boost confidence and progress. We use tried and tested screening tools to identify children with dyslexic tendencies and plan their individualised support programs based on the results. We also work with professionals from external agencies and Leeds Local authority to inform personalised approaches for pupils which require specialist support.
Please contact Miss C Daniels (SENDCo) or Mrs A Armstrong (Lead Practitioner and SENDCo) for support with cognition and learning.
