Music

Intent

Our goal is to make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence and cultural capital of all children. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. As children get older, we expect them to maintain their concentration for longer and to listen to more extended pieces of music. Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. Also, we teach the children how to work with others to compose music and perform for an audience.

Implementation

  • The whole school music curriculum is delivered by a professional music teacher from Leeds City Council's ArtForms.
  • The music curriculum ensures students sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate going through skills progression as directed by the National Curriculum (using the inter-related dimensions of music)
  • To support staff subject knowledge to ensure a good music curriculum being taught throughout school.
  • To plan regular CPD and staff meetings to review the music coverage within school and develop staff understanding and knowledge.
  • To continue to build on the bank of instruments within school to support children’s learning and musical experiences- every Year 4 child learns to play ukulele.
  • Children of all abilities and backgrounds to get access to being taught by real musicians.
  • Children to be able to use some of the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed.
  • Scope for children’s participation and wider opportunities for performing to greater audiences will be increased and therefore musical benefits greatened.
  • All children to get experience of performing to a wider audience. Children will be aware of opportunities available and possibility of accessing them.
  • The school choir, led by a professional music teacher, offers opportunities for our children to enter competitions and festivals, performing to the wider community.
  • School song which encapsulates the school’s statement ‘’I am powerful, I am strong’’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CAL3OC-Qfk&safe=active

Impact

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows students to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. The integral nature of music and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a student may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose- either as listener, creator or performer. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse. They have an understanding of how to further develop skills less known to them, should they ever develop an interest in their lives.

  • Children will achieve age related expectations in music at the end of their cohort year.
  • They will retain knowledge that is pertinent to music.
  • Finally, children will have the opportunity to foster their instrumental flare and use this as a form of expression.
