One world, one school

Physical Education

Intent

At Hugh Gaitskell we recognise the importance of PE and the key role it has to play in promoting physical activity, participation and a healthy lifestyle. The intent of our PE curriculum adheres to the aims of the National Curriculum to ensure all children, including those with SEND, are given the opportunity to develop their ability and achievement in PE. Our PE curriculum ensures all children are able to succeed in physical activities, cooperate and collaborate with others and embed life-long values such as fairness and respect. We aim to develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity and strive to improve their overall health and well-being, in line with our whole school curriculum statement of ‘I am powerful and I am strong’.

Implementation

Pupils at Hugh Gaitskell participate in weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme teaches a variety of sports to ensure all children develop confidence and tolerance of others’ strengths and weaknesses. Lessons are engaging and aim to build on the children’s knowledge and skills from the prior year group. The children learn in a positive safe environment where they build the confidence to leave primary school healthy and physically active. We also provide a range of opportunities for all children to engage in extracurricular activities during and after school including the Hugh Gaitskell Football Academy, ‘Football the Common Language’, led by Leeds United. All teachers lead at least one after school throughout the year ranging from tennis to choir singing. This inclusive approach aims to encourage not only physical development but also well-being.

Impact

Our PE curriculum aims to improve the lifelong wellbeing and fitness of all children at Hugh Gaitskell, not only through the skills taught but through the underpinning values that PE promotes. Pupils are taught to be physically successful and how to take responsibility for their own fitness and well being. Our impact is to continue to motivate our children to succeed in competitive sport and other physical activities in order to live lifelong happy and healthy lives.
