Welcome back to Spring 2. We hope you are all well rested and looking forward to the half term ahead. The staff have planned a really exciting half term including trips and visits and of course don’t forget the Easter Bonnet Parade nearer to the holidays. Get your glue and scissors out now and start making them everyone! Here’s what we are doing this half term.
Topic Work: This term our topic is called “Toy Story”. We are starting off the topic with a history focus, looking at toys from now and in the past. Please send your child in with their favourite toy so we can talk about how they play with them and and why it is their favourite. If you have kept your favourite childhood toy, we’d love to see and hear all about it! We have the fantastic opportunity to visit Abbey House Museum where the children will get to experience first hand what shops were like in the victorian times and they will then take part in a workshop, looking and playing with toys old and new. We will be watching old film clips of toys from the past. Year 1 will alsobe visiting Crossflatts Park looking at pushes and pulls and Year2 will be investigating how fast cars travel from a ramp. The topic eventually leads us on to design and technology and Puppets. The children will learn about lots of different types of puppets and will then design and make their own.
!Calling all budding sewers!
Anyone who is able to help threading needles on an afternoon
would be very much appreciated - please speak to your child's class teacher.
Literacy:
In Year 1 the children will be looking at fantasy stories. They will be doing lots of drama, looking at settings of fantasy stories and building up to writing their own fantasy story. In Year 2 we will be looking at different books by the same author. We will be looking at the author Jill Murphy and Shirley Hughes. If you have any books by these authors please send them in so we can read them in class, just don’t forget to name them.
Maths:
In KS1 we will be looking data handling and measures. In Year 2 we will be telling the time to the hour, half hour, days of the week and months of the year. We will all then move on to calculating, measure and understanding shape. The children will be solving word problems and recapping over length, capacity and mass. In preparation for the forthcoming Year 2 SATs we will run a SATs meeting for parents this half term and will inform you of the date nearer the time. This will provide you with all the information you need on what the children will be doing, how the SATs are administered and hopefully put any parents’ minds at rest who have not gone through them already! Please don’t worry, the children really enjoy them!
