Our new link with Pakistan

We hope to learn a great deal from our link schools in Pakistan

At Hugh Gaitskell we are proud to announce our new Global link to a cluster of schools based in Karachi, Pakistan. 3A will be linked to another primary class, and will take part in a program in order to promote cultural understanding and mutual respect between the two countries. We are looking forward to learning more about the Pakistani education system and culture, and hopefully two teachers from our school will visit Pakistan early next year to tour schools and meet our counterparts. We will also be honoured to host a party of headteachers from Karachi early next year,

So far, 3A have sent over initial letters of introduction to our partner schools, and are really looking forward to recieving replies from them. During this term, the class will be having a Skype chat with Pakistan, as well as producing a 'digital diary' which shows the daily routines of the children in the run-up to Christmas. We hope that our partner school in Karachi will find them interesting.

Here are some examples of the letters that 3A sent to Pakistan...

French

Map of France

Bonjour! French day was a real success with all children in Year 3 and 4 joining in with our special day.

Teaching Assistants

The children dressed up in the colours of the French flag: blue, white and red and we even had some Raymond Blancs and famous French painters!

Throughout the day the children tasted different French foods such as pain au chocolate, brie and crepes. The children were also very lucky as we had 12 students from Leeds Metropolitan University who delivered some mini French lessons to the children. The day was lots of fun and it helped to raise the children’s awareness of learning another language.

At HGPS we learn French in Reception, Year’s 3, 4, and 5. The children love the lively lessons where they sing and play games and do role plays in French!

Here are some links that will help you learn French.

International Students

Over the past few years at HGPS we have hosted several international students. Our children love having students from different parts of the world as it gives them a chance to find out about different ways of life and cultures.

This year we have been lucky enough to have Charlie Brooks who came all the way from Rochester, New York.

Mr Brooks outside York Minster

Charlie had this to say about his time at HGPS:

‘My time at HGPS was a very worthwhile experience. With the help of a supportive teaching staff I was able to acquire and develop new teaching strategies that further improved my teaching practice. It was great to teach in a classroom with a variety of cultural backgrounds and be a part of a school that celebrates all of these cultures. This experience at HGPS is one that I will never forget and will most certainly benefit me in my teaching career.’

We are sorry to see our French student from Perpignan, Odon Pic leave us but we loved having him at HGPS. The children gained lots from having a native French speaker in their class.
This is what he had to say about his time at HGPS:

Bonjour,

“In a rather short space of time at HGPS, I discovered new creative pedagogies and a stimulating learning environment. I liked the way pupils interacted with me, they all gave their full attention and there was a strong sense of collaboration in the different classrooms I observed. As they were really willing to know more about my own culture, I involved them in different French lessons which they found interesting, engaging and exciting to such an extent that they asked me for more.

I made the most of my visit at HGPS thanks to a dynamic, dedicated and helpful staff and I’m really proud to have worked with them.
I would also like to add that I enjoyed this unforgettable and worthwhile experience which will benefit me in my teaching career and enable me to improve my teaching practises.”

Au revoir…
Odon Pic
