Numeracy in the EYFS

In Reception, Problem Solving Reasoning and Number is an important part of the curriculum. We aim to make numeracy engaging and entertaining from the beginning, exposing children to mathematical concepts through the areas of provision as well as through daily whole-class and small-group work.

This is what some of the children in the Hugh Gaitskell FS 2 classes think about numeracy:

“I like doing shapes and counting. I can do all my counting and tell the teachers what the numbers and the shapes are.”

“I can count up to 5 and jump up to 10. I like counting with Numicon… I can count up to 16 with Numicon.”

“I like writing numbers. Number 1 is the best. I won when we played snap.”

We think that numeracy should be fun, and so we make learning as hands-on as we possibly can. Our school is part of the Leeds multi-sensory mathematics program, which means that we have a commitment to using high quality innovative resources which engage children with all types of learning styles. Numicon is a key part of our way of teaching maths along with fun interactive games, jigsaws, squidgy numbers, 3D shapes, measuring bugs and computer software.

You can learn more about Numicon here:

Out learning environment

We have a maths-rich learning environment, from working walls which the children can access to support their learning…

To numbers in all the areas of provision…

As well as lots of fun mathematical challenges!

At the moment in Reception we are learning about addition and subtraction. Have a go at this game about number bonds to 10. Can you find the right pipes to save the whale?

Phonics in the Foundation Stage

In reception we have a phonics lesson for 15 minutes every day. These lessons are aimed to be quick, fun and very fast paced. Children are taught all the letter sounds of the alphabet, their letter names and how to blend and segment words. This 15 minutes a day aids the children immensely and we have seen great results over the years!

So far this year we are very pleased with the children’s progress. We have 3 phonics groups within the unit which are all working very hard to achieve their full potential. To help your children please speak to your class teacher to find out what you can be doing at home! Some simple ideas of games to play are listed below!

  1. I spy

  1. Number plate game – looking at letters on number plates and thinking of words beginning with the corresponding sound

  1. Shopping lists – popping to the shops? Don’t forget to make a list!

  1. Bingo – Use letters or words instead of numbers to find a bingo winner!

  1. Sing – It’s easy and quick! Sing the alphabet, and ask your child about the funny jolly phonics songs they learn (cd available from school)

The following links can be used online at home to play some great phonics games. The children will have lots of fun whilst still leaning!

Just to remind you that phonics sessions aid both the children’s writing and reading and so please remember to bring book bags every Wednesday and Friday for resources sent home and to change their reading books, thank you!
